About Precious Volume(Hexi Baojuan)

　Precious Volume ( Hexi Baojuan ) is Dunhuang Bianwen's own clique. It developed from Tang Dynasty (618-907), past more than thousand years, was part of important and splendid cultural media in China history. After Song Dynasty (960-1279), it spread over the country. As time pass by, It amassed in Hexi Corride of Gansu Province abundantly with decline of Silk Road, turn into a sum of valuable cultural heritage. From it, we can know the folk custom and the live condition at that time and that place.

　Hexi Baojuan, just as its name implies("Baojuan" means precious volume in Chinese), is mostly talking about the secular and folk story, which was fond of seeing and hearing, kept, loved and created by folks there. People read or listened it, regarded it as teaching material. They laved the nutrition of culture, shared experience of livelihood and gave publicity to morals by it. Baojuan can tell them right and wrong, virtue and vice in order to encourage people to go after good but not evil.

　Baojuan came with history, it contented Buddhistic cause and effect rotate, Taoist myth, and Confucian moral principles, showed us a mixed appearance. Meanwhile, it mostly affected by the people's educational level during the process of imparting and copying. It got vulgarization and dying more and more. It is hard to have a narrow escape that Baojuan will be took place by other modern recreational activities.

　Some scholars outside had began to study it many years ago, but the first selections of Hexi Baojuan was published in 1988 by Lanzhou University Press in China. Afterward, the publishing of Selections of Hexi Baojuan and Selections of Hexi Baojuan Ⅱ by Taiwan Xinwenfeng Press Corporation made some outstanding papers regain its color. It's our honor and responsibility that we should do our best to creat a bright future for this valuable heritage.
